Breeding :
Application of planned genetic alteration of the population so that the animal can be better
fit to the demand of market characteristics.
Objective of breeding / Breeding goals :
1. For better production of meat, milk, fiber.
2. For increasing reproductive efficiency.
3. For breeds of high fertility.
4. For rapid economical gain.
5. For obtaining desirable type & conformation.
6. For increasing disease resistance.
7. For obtaining high dressing percentage.
8. For obtaining breed that are free from defect.
9. For obtaining longevity breed.
10. For genetic improvement .
SELECTION AND BREEDING
Selection:
Selection is the choosing of animals with better performance. It is done for better production
and reproduction.
The selection of the better animal is due to the better genotype (the genetic constituents of an
animal i.e. the collection of genes which comprises the heredity of each cells of animal).
In a population of animals with better performance there prevails an wide variation of the
performance of animals – egg, milk, meat, number of offspring etc.
The factors that affect the selection of traits for improvement/ Important factors :
1. The goal of selection programme.
2. The heritability of the traits.
3. The economic value of improvement in each trait.
4. Correlation among the traits.
5. The cost of selection programme .
6. The range in variation of expression of each trait.
7. Accuracy of the method.
8. Intensity of selection.
9. Generation interval.
