Pathologic calcification
Calcification is the deposition of calcium salts in
body tissues.
It normally occurs in the formation
of bones and teeth but calcium can be deposited abnormally in soft
tissue, causing it to harden.
The calcium is usually deposited
as-
Ø calcium phosphate,
Ø calcium carbonate and
Ø hydroxyapatite in normal bones and
teeth.
Pathologic calcification is the deposition of calcium salts in
tissues other than bones and teeth.
There are three types of pathologic
calcification. These are-
1.
Dystrophic
calcification,
2.
Metastatic
calcification and
3.
Calcinosis
circumscripta.
